Lake Ella rising
Stephanie and I have both written about Lake Ella before (see "Familiar places" and "Walking around Lake Ella." It's one of our favorite spots in Tallahassee. Fay made it rain hard in Tallahassee for a couple of days - but - even after the rain had slowed - flooding continued at places like Lake Ella, where there's almost no place for the water to go. The lake almost reached North Monroe Street and flooded many of the business that dot one side of the lake, the Cottages at Lake Ella, that used to be an old 1950s motel/roadside park. Apparently - among the businesses we go to - Lofty Pursuits was unscathed.
Even Monday afternoon some of Mom's colleagues were leaving early because the Interstate 10 bridge over the Ochlockonee River - into Gadsden County - was slated to close because of rising flood waters. (On the other hand, our friends Mark and Sara and their neighbors are happy at last in as much as Cypress Pond, in their neighborhood, between Lake Bradford and Capital Circle, has filled up.) But five people have died already, and so let's pray for a break in the rain.

The stores closest to the lake - including the bike shop - got hit hardest. But our favorite store, Quarter Moon, which Stephanie visited in July, and where Vincent regularly shopped for Christmas presents for all the women in our family (Hulmani June, Grandma Beck, Grandma Martha, Aunt Penny, Grandma Mary, Meemaw, Granny, and his Mom). For more on this cool Lake Ella store, see: http://www.quartermoonimports.com/newlakeella.htm
My friend Kati, who has also written about the Lake Ella flooding, took these pictures. A fund-raising concert - in the American Legion where Vincent's friend Julian posthumously received a Purple Heart while we watched 14 months ago - will raise money for the flooded lake benefits, most without flood insurance. -- Perry
