Friday night out
On an October Friday night, Vincent, Frisco, Stephanie, and I all went out on the Louisville South/West side. We took Vincent (and his friend Alex?) to a party at a classmate's house - with some of the Danes there - who lived off of Taylor Blvd. - not too far from Churchill Downs and the Arcadia Community Center, where we had once volunteered. Vincent spiked his hair up with mousse before going. We walked Frisco around the white working-class neighborhood afterwards. Then we headed out to eat. We thought about going to a Moby Dick restaurant - a regional Captain D's type chain - like a White Castle's for fried fish - but instead found Shark's on West 7th. Shark's was an African American-oriented establishment - probably quite a bit like Moby Dick's - but it's apparently not a chain. I was reminded a bit of Olean's, across from the Florida A&M University campus in Tallahassee, or even of the Valois Cafe in "Slim's Table." The fried fish wasn't good for us - but fish is better than beef - and we had some interesting sides and even a dessert (peach cobbler). We got a chance to talk a little bit with fellow customers before our food arrived. We had driven by Shark's several times on our way to Arcadia and Churchill. I went back to pick Vincent up (after not much time - because I believe he was to take the ACT the next day). I'm not sure who had a better time, Vincent and Alex or Stephanie, Frisco, and me (although Frisco had to stay in the car while Stephanie and I ate - and no fish for him).
