Stephanie spent part of Sunday morning reading a front-page Sunday "New York Times" article about the kinds of cancer treatments her Mom is currently undergoing. Some of the drugs combat cancer - hold it at bay - by cutting blood flow to the tumors, which sometimes shrinks them. The treatments can extend life (for example, for the person pictured) - for how much is a matter of research and debate - and make life more enjoyable, but they have side effects and are often rather expensive. Stephanie's stepfather also beat cancer some 20 years with experimental drugs, and my father tried to get my stepmother in experimental drug therapy but it was too late. (Unfortunately, Bob's ill again, perhaps as a result of that treatment long ago.) Of course, we'll be hoping that when Nancy's test results come back they'll be good news about tumor growth/shrinkage. She goes back for more treatment/chemotherapy Wednesday (same day my Mother goes to phyiscal therapy). Let's hope for healing for Bob and both of our mothers.
